Which is more expensive?
Brushed motors require permanent magnets and relatively complex electronics, called a controller. These make brushless motors more expensive to buy upfront.
However, because the brushless motors don’t have any parts rubbing together, and therefore wearing out, the lifetime costs can be lower if you used regularly.

Now that so many tools are battery powered, motor efficiency has become more important. The more efficient a motor is, the longer the battery will last between charges.
Which is more popular?
For named brand and premium power tools, brushless motors are now the norm. Brushed motors can still be found in entry level products.
